Man, things have been extremely busy in the Photos by Chris Martin camp… In July I went out with my good friend Josiah Van Dien to cover the South Florida and Orlando dates of the 2011 Vans Warped Tour and after initially getting my assignments done and submitted, I totally forgot to post some of the personal content to the blog. Well here’s looking at you kid, because now it’s time to enjoy some photos after the jump!
I started up in Orlando as my main assignment was to follow There For Tomorrow around to do a “Day in the Life” online feature for Alternative Press Magazine. We had a ton of fun together and you can read more about that and see some exclusive photos up at Altpress.com
At around 7pm the boys in TFT left the grounds to go visit family and do laundry, so I started wandering around and shooting some of the sets that I wanted to watch. The Devil Wears Prada was playing on the closest stage to where I was at the time, and I really enjoy their live show so I had to go check it out! (remember there are additional photos below in the thumbnails!)
A Day To Remember was set to hit the stage soon after TDWP finished so I stuck around and hung out with a few of my friends before the big boys went on. It is so crazy to see how the crowds react now to ADTR, because just a few years ago, I was touring with them in a tiny van hitting tiny venues and the biggest draw they had at the time (other than in Ocala) was in West Palm Beach, FL. West Palm has always been like a 2nd home to the guys, which is also why the show on the next day really set it off.
A Day To Remember were the headlining band in Orlando, so after they played and the crowds dispersed, the entire fairgrounds turned into a big party. I hung out with the Every Avenue guys for a bit, and then got my eat and drink on! Warped Tour usually does a big BBQ every night for the bands and I had to indulge in some tasty eats. This night was a bit different because they ended up having a Luau/Prom and had tons of different mixed drink stations set up. I stuck around for a bit and then went home to get some rest So I would be ready to drive back to WPB the next day.
Josiah and I ended up getting a super late start the next day, and didn’t end up leaving Orlando until around 11am, but we still made it in time to the Cruzan Amphitheater in West Palm to catch some of the bands I wanted to shoot. My Day began with shooting Every Avenue after some adventurous arguments with security guards telling me I wasn’t allowed to shoot, even though I had full press access. Everything ended up working out, but I will say that I can not stand the security at Cruzan.
Next up, I stopped by the Alternative Press Magazine tent, where the guys from the August Pop cover were signing copies of the mag. I snapped a few quick photos and then ran off to catch Gym Class Heroes set and then got to see one song from Lucero even though I wished I could have watched the whole set!
Finally, I hung out with the ADTR guys some more, and then took a few photos of their set. The sun at this time was just starting to set so the light was gorgeous and I was stoked about being able to see their show when it wasn’t dark. After their set I checked out Go Radio and then at the end of the night, Alt Press threw a mustache party, which I only ended up staying for about an hour of… The best part is that everyone that had facial hair, cut it down to ridiculous moustaches and they had a competition at the end of the night to see who had the best stache! I was pooped from 2 days of full sun, heat, and hardly any water so I ended up going home and getting an amazing night sleep!
