A few months back, I had the honor and privilege of being commissioned to photograph the new cover and interiors of Kerrang Magazine for some of the last remaining rock and roll legends, The Foo Fighters. The Foos had a full on media day at their studio in the Valley in Southern California, so there were around 8 photoshoots and 4 video interviews happening that day. I was initially told that I would have around 45 minutes to shoot 4 different setups, which I actually thought was a great amount of time. But as it would happen (and as usually does in the rock and roll world) some of the other photographers took a bit longer than expected so my time was cut down to 20 minutes. As I always do, I made the best of it, jammed through the shoot in 15 minutes, and was really only able to pull it all off with the amazing help of my friends and assistants for the day, Cody Blue and Marc Liscio.
After the shoot, I had asked Dave Grohl about the Neve Board and if it was there in the studio. His eyes lit up asking “Oh you are a musician too?” I of course replied yes, and he took me in to the console room to check out the iconic Neve Board that so many amazing musicians have recorded on through the years (It used to reside in Sound City Studios before Dave purchased it to bring it back to his studio). I was in awe of the energy of the room, it was alive with electricity, and after seeing all the signatures from people who have recorded on the board it felt a bit overwhelming getting to touch a piece of history that has contributed its sound to so many staples in my musical upbringing. (Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Rage Against the Machine, Metallica, Nirvana, just to name a few)
Needless to say, it was a super exciting shoot, and probably my favorite session to date. Take a look below to see some of the shots I took for the Magazine as well as a few exclusives that have not been seen before! Also be sure to check out the awesome Behind The Scenes Video filmed by the amazing Cody Blue!
Also be sure to check out The Foo Fighters new Album “Concrete and Gold” out everywhere now! It’s definitely a banger, and one of my favorite albums they have written to date!
